Ascent of El Volcan Tajumulco

12-14-02, San Marcos, Guatemala

We started out early that morning, getting a ride up to the base of the hike in a pickup at 7:00 am. The ascent crew consisted of me, my brother Lars, and three other Peace Coprs volunteers: Monique, Adam, and Mike. Tajumulco is the tallest mountain in Central America at 13,800 feet. The thin air and my lack of physical conditioning made the hike a challenge, but I reached the summit after five hours. What an achievement!
